Mini Max LAB 22
Just seeking contact with anyone, especially local to Brissie, who has a LAB 22. I have just purchased one, obviously second hand, but it appeared to be in good condition and almost complete. I have a copy of the manual which is a great help, but am interested in user know how especially any things to avoid.

Well, I had to check out what kind of tools you guys down under are using and checked the Net for a graphic of the LAB 22.
It reminds me of my old ShopSmith 5-in-1 saw, sander, lathe, drill press, and joiner.
It also reminds me that I have to pull that out - TODAY - and get busy making a carvers mallet.
Clean er up! Oil/wax er! Grease er! Check all the belts & bearings. Then have lots of fun working on er!

I do not have the LAB 22 but have just sold a MiniMax CU300 classic that I this is a larger and more up to date version of what you have. I currently use a MiniMax SC-2 panel saw due to space limitations and I do very much miss the multifunction options of the larger machine. I have found the MiniMax to be very accurate and easy to adjust and set up and your machine should be no different once you clean it up and replace any badly worn parts. From what I have seen in photos the LAB 22 may also have a sliding table attachment as well as the slot mortiser attachment. I found both of these functions very handy in furniture making. The spindle moulder function is also very useful and if it has the 40mm head there are lots of suitable CMT profile cutters available. But do take special care if you plan to use this with just manual feed as this can be very dangerous and I would only use this if you fit a power feed unit. In regard to the jointer/thicknesser I recomend looking at replacing the straight blade cutter head with a spiral unit for both quietness (more important in current residential living) and quality of finish especially on difficult timbers. You can check with Robert Gregory at RGD Agencies in Qld if he has LAB 22 replacement head.
Cheers,

Thanks Paintman for your interest, it does have a sliding table as well as the slot mortiser while the spindle moulder is a 30 mm one. So far the condition appears to be excellent.
Two questions , what type of bits did you use in the slot mortiser and what type of power feed did you have?

30mm is industry standard for moulders, so finding heads should be no issue; Carbatec stocks them.
Rob can also get custom made spiral heads if there isn't a stock one, our experience obtaining one was a bit of a saga though...

Thanks for that info about the head, i have seen a 30 mm cutter set for under $200 at Hare & Forbes. A spiral head might have to wait a while. Regards Owen

I bought a set of Italian "upcut" slot cutters with the machine from SMC . I mostly used the 8mm size as this enabled me to use std off the shelf KD hardwood for the tonges. You can also get suitable cutters from Carbitool in Vic and they will post them to you. I bought an Italian three speed unit and fitted it with a removable mounting which was quite a difficult job. Leeda machines have several suitable units. Whilst it does take some effort to fit a suitable power feed it is well worth it from both a safety and doed remove the chance of "snipe" that usually occurs with manual feeding. In regard to the spindle cutters I would assume this machine has the EUR standard head that uses limiters in addition to just cutters. The CMT cutters are sold as pairs with the limiters and lock into the cutting head. Cheers,
Paintman

Hi Brendan, I have sold on the Lab 22 as i was lucky to get a near new C26 at a very good price. I found the Lab22 a great machine within its limitations IE no blade tilt - single motor - stability of the fence. I would have been happy to continue with it as it handled all the tasks i put to it. Minimax lab 22
Hi
just saw your message re Minimax lab 22. Did you keep it. I find the saw is a great back up
to my main saw and is very accurate. Not too impressed with the jointer and I have never used the spindle moulder. Mine is missing the guard for the jointer so I made one. The dust collection could be better. I do not like the fact that the saw guide has to be moved on to the secondary bar at the back of the machine to do wider cuts. I did not get a manual but as I only paid $120 I figure I am well in front. Did you keep yours?
Cheers

LAB 22 parts
Hello,
My Father in law has bought a second hand LAB22. I have printed off a copy of the manual form the link by Joez.
Does anyone know where to get spare parts from that correlates to the part numbers in the manual. My concern is that it is an old machine and supplier parts may have been discontinued (preferably in the UK)
