Zinsser Wipe-On Poly

I have been looking for a good wip-on poly ever since Bunnings dumped MinWax a few years ago. I tried Feast Watson and it turned out to be a total disaster. What a piece of rubbish that was. I came across this brand called Zinsser at Thrifty-Link Hardware Mitre-10, and it turned out to be very good. I reckon it is as good as the MinWax.

I too was unimpressed with Feast-Watson wipe-on poly; until I added 30% thinners by volume. It's just too thick as it comes straight from the tin.

Zinsser is a well known brand of finishing products in North America. Last time I saw their products here was at Masters.

Unfortunately, there are no Thrifty-Link stores in Brisbane. Nearest is Southport or Kilcoy!

Unfortunately Zinsser wipe on poly is not showing up in the Thrifty-link online shop.
Google is showing a Thrifty-Link at Brendale (north side of Brisbane - 10 minutes from home) but not listed in the Thrifty-link web site. Might need to make a phone call.

Zinsser finishing products are pretty well known throughout USA and have been going since 1849 with very good products.

One of their popular products is/was/is? Bulls Eye Shellac, which they used to say had a 3 year shelf life. That's garbage no shellac has a shelf life that long, They have since removed shelf life dates from this product.

Back in 2016 Bob Flexner wrote an article on this in Popular Woodworking titled User-Unfriendly Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac which is well worth a look Click >HERE< to read that very interesting article.

I make my own... 50/50 mix of a good quality Poly varnish in your choice of finish with white spirit. Using the British Paints Polyurethane I use a bit more than 50% of that, but 50/50 is a good start. I make just enough to use over a few days. I got tired of tossing part cans into the bin at $30 a can...

I use Crowie's brew 30% Tung Oil, 40% Oil based Poly satin, 30% Mineral Turps.

Works a treat and can be brushed on as well as wiping.

It is why MinWax is so amazing. 3 years after I first opened it and it is still usable. It is like magic. I still have half a tin of it. Hopefully the Zinsser will behave the same.

Found Zinsser WOP at Sunlite Mitre 10 in Pitt St Sydney.
I have a suitable project which will need finish in a coupla weeks. I’ll report on results

For what it's worth, I make a homemade wipe-on-poly for my toys.

The formula was given to me by an old master woodturner mate, Ian.

30% Tung Oil from Sceneys Decking Oil, Tung Oil, Linseed Oil, Citrus Solvent, Fence Black

40% Clear Satin Polyurethane - I use Cabots Brand

30% Mineral Turpentine

I've even added stain to colour it on a copy of projects.

I only make it up in small batches in a glass screwtop jar.

That may interest/help some who can't find the Zinseer product.

I use Haymes General Purpose Clear Satin, Haymes Tung Oil Finish and Mineral Turps in the same proportions as Crowie. The Tung Oil Finish is made for floors and I believe it might contain a small amount of varnish but it still works.

As I said in my post #10 above it works well. I have just finished a Jarrah display case which has come up with a nice sheen.
