EEE-ULTRA SHINE - Yorkshire Grit

Years ago (January 2013) one of the (now deceased) members demonstrated EEE-Ulrtra Shine and I was very impressed with it then.

The late Lewis Harper (issatree) AKA condom man (because of his white paper condom suit he wore for turning). An honest, kind hearted, generous man, who loved what he did and did it well. Sadly Lewis (issatree) passed away December 2017.

Back in 1990 or 91 (can't remember which) Lewis asked if he could go with us to demonstrate at Melb Working With Wood Show. I gave him the nod and we set him up at the back f our stand in a prominent position where the public had good access to him and his demos.

He turned a few small items and then did a demonstration of Shellawax and early version of EEE. A man came in on the tail end of his demo and asked him what he uses to get a good finish.
Leweys' response: I use a beeswax, linseed oil mix that I make myself.

Lewis you're supposed to be demonstrating Shellawax, EEE and Trad Wax.

"I did." he said, but that man asked me what I used. This was Lewis at his most honest.

Lewis was also known by some as Lewey the Lip because once he started talking he could stop. He could talk under water for an hour without taking a breath as I'm sure many members here would attest to.

About halfway through the first day he had done one demo and talked non stop for a solid 3 hours straight, about everything to do with turning and what he used for finishing, etc, etc. He couldn't help himself he had to help people if they asked. It was almost impossible to stop him. We had a Record Powered Helmets (pre Racal & others now long gone) Sent lewis off to have lunch and when he returned I told Lewis he had to wear it by order of the Show safety officer.

He duly wore it but every now and again we would catch him with the shield pulled, talking to people. Told him he had to have the shield down and the filter running unless he was doing a demo. But people can't hear or understand what I'm saying, he said.

That's OK Lewis You can lift it when you do a demo. He did around 30 demos that afternoon without mentioning his home brew (which by the way was a pretty ordinary and sticky finish).

That was Lewis. He was either loved or hated disliked. There are a lot of people who miss him and lots who have missed out on his help since he passed away.

Would you believe it.... 9 phone calls today and 3 of them said EEE was a copy of Y/grit. Cause they'd seen it on "The YouTube".

Yup, I believe it.

The so-called information highway has become the disinformation highway. Once it was "I read it in the papers so it must be right", now we can reach out even to the totally illiterate & they can see it & hear it (on u-boob, or whatever) so they know it's right!

Keep taking your ulcer medication, it's your only salvation.......

Have you considered contacting the YT channels and politely giving them the facts? I like to think most people try to be honest and they’ve probably just made an error, or more likely simply repeating something they’ve heard/read. It seams like a fairly simple action to take with a very strong upside. Perhaps send them a sample too.

If you have a good look on Youtube you can find a dud called Kieth Barrow doing a review of a brand new product in 2016 called Yorkshire grit. He stated that he was his first customer so from this one can assume that it has only been on the market for 4 years.

Thanks for that video link. Well first off I was going to edit your post and change dud to dude. Glad I didn't.

Not sure if I drifted off during his demo but was he actually applying the Y/Grit with abranet (abrasive net). SO he was applying an abrasive paste with an abrasive net.

So if his abranet was 1000 grit using it with the Y/Grit would have given the equivalent of 1000 grit finish as they (Y/Git) claimed. Had he used 2000 grit abranet he would have got the equivalent of 2000 grit. Doesn't matter which way he did it using the abrasive net he was either wasting abranet or Y/Grit b because (in theory) one would cancel out the other.

One of the people I spoke to yesterday described that same application to me so suggested he get EEE sand to 800 or 1200 if he wanted an even better finish then apply the EEE as per the data sheet and work it until he saw a mirror image of the rag and his fingers in the face of the work and he would be at around 20,000 grit.

Couldn't see the benefit of the Y/Grit at all in that video, unless as I said I drifted off at some stage. By the way the sound of the scraping on the bowl when applying it made me think it was about 400 grit or less.

Anyway a Rotary Sander and EEE would have turned his approx 15 min (added 5 minutes for sealer to dry) of sanding, then sanding sealer and applying the Y/G into about a 3 minute job, with no sanding marks and an almost piano finish shine, with the chatoyancy of the grain jumping out of the wood like Tigers' eye or opal.

I just don't understand. Maybe I'm being petty but if you follow the method in that video it will take up to 4 times longer for what appears to be an inferior final effect.

I am not knocking Yorkshire Grit as I said in an earlier post, I am merely commenting on what I saw on the video link in Warricks' previous post.

Yep that's a pretty well spot on observation Brenton.

Our other waxes have a sandalwood fragrance oil added to cut the mineral turpentine smell (we use mineral turps because it's no where as dangerous health-wise as pure turpentine).

We keep EEE natural so additives, like oil, won't interfere with the friction polish finishes it's designed to go under. Waste of time having the fragrance in it for use over other finishes as it would only be of benefit to the person using it and wouldn't linger after the process was completed like it does in the other waxes which hold the fragrance for a long period.
