Achieving this look
Sorry for the vague title.
I’m about to build a new staircase for our house which we raised and I’m after a bit more ‘depth’ with the finish than I would expect to get using a simple stain.
The end product I’m aiming for is pictured below except instead of oak I was thinking of using QLD maple just to keep things local.
In the past I have finished re-production Chippendale furniture with shellac that I tint with a few drops of stain.
I’ve never used dyes before and I’m wondering if applying a black dye and lightly sanding before applying a stain and finish will give me the look I’m after?
Any advice as to whether or not I’m going in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Sorry I can't answer you question but I wish you well with the project. No mean feat and plenty of challenges.
