Some actual progress this week which is nice. Made the base, secured the fully finished top and installed the last of the drawer frames and dust panels. So that's the carcass pretty much complete. I can finally start the drawers. Worked out I need almost twenty meters of timber just for the drawer sides and backs...image.jpgimage.jpg

Well it is time to start the drawers so I scoured the shed for every scrap of pine I could find, then spent the whole day re sawing, thicknessing and gluing, and now have enough for the daw sides and backs. I now need to decide what to do about the bottoms. I am thinking ply, as the quantity I require is quite large and I don't have enough salvaged wood to do it in solid. Thankfully I still have enough jarrah for the fronts, although I haven't dressed it yet. Photos show before and afters of the pine.

Just found this thread (what have I been doing?) and read through the whole thing. A great WIP and looking forward to seeing it come together.
From an OH&S point of view, I'm a bit concerned about the bare feet in the workshop, I'd never work in the shed without my thongs on!
It's good to see you putting your Dad's old timber to good use too.

Well it has certainly been a while since I've done anything major on this one, what with a second kid in the picture and new job, and lots of rennos around home. Had a day off work yesterday though and made some progress.
I have decided to go with metal drawer runners and screwed on Jarrah fronts as I am worried that a traditional style with no runners would be less user friendly, especially with the large drawers. This will be used daily in our bedroom after all..
The drawers will still be dovetailed etc so I am only cheating a little bit.
All the draw runners have been installed and I have dry assembled the first small draw ready for gluing. Not the Jarrah front though.I thought that I would make allthe small drawers first, to get my dovetails right – less wood to replace if I stuff one, then make the large drawers, then do all the fronts. Pic of draw runners installed.

Just to let you know I am still alive - I have been slowly getting this done. Over three years now…
I am over half way through the drawers now. I’m using pine for the sides and back, and Tassie oak for the fronts. The TA is terrible, and tears out a lot so having to be very careful. The larger drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the smaller ones are dovetailed at the front and slotted at the back.
They will eventually have Jarrah faces put on them. I am trying hard to get it finished before Christmas as there is another baby coming along in January. Wish me luck…

Damon90 - I've managed to get one more draw done since the last post - Unfortunately I keep having to travel for work, and other projects, and now the Ashes...

12 Drawers and the carcass all complete, and one of the handbrakes.
Well it took me a while to even find the thred again. Ive had two kids since starting this project and achieved a lot of other things along the way. Decided that the wife isn't going to be holding this over my head any longer.
So lately I have finished all the drawers, spent ages cleaning up the sides, and have just finished the final coat of minmax satin on the drawers and cabinet.
Of course, after committing to pine for the draw sides and completing them, I picked up about 30 lengths of 3.6m beams that were the exposed beams of a swanky house in Perth (for free!) Enough to do a million drawer side, bottoms etc
I'll tell you what though - It is FANTASTIC not having it in my workshop anymore.
Next step is to put the drawers in, then half lap the boards for the back and put them in, then start to make the drawer fronts, which will be Jarrah. How should I secure these? They were originally going to be half blind dovetails and inset into the frame, but I made some small mistakes in the frame and wasn't happy enough. Design change...

Some of the boards I received after almost finishing the drawers. I used 3 for the back of the carcass.

Re-sawn, and dressed. Next step is to put a half lap on them (14 boards).

Well I had a blister on my hand after putting almost 40m of half laps on the back panels of the cabinets
I decided to move towards the centre from both sides, nailed the boards.
I fabricated a vracket out of stainless that will bolt to a similar one affixed to the wall to stop the cabinet being pulled over.
A quick rabbet to cover the bracket.
Last board screwed into place to make it removable.
The gaps are even, the last image just makes it appear uneven..
I have now moved it into the house, in its final resting place, with temporary handles on the drawers. Off to sunny Adelaide for3 weeks for work, then I'll start the Jarrah drawer faces.

Oh, and this thing is amazingly heavy. With a strop around my shoulders, I could only just lift one end.
