Filler

I created (a monster) a heavy, stiff, walnut mantel. The beveled corners are pretty good but open. What would be the best lasting filler? Would timber mate be sufficient? I'm afraid it will just crack.

Oooooh, that's a big gap to fill Timbermate will last, but Walnut yellows quite a bit with age so, while it might blend in now, it's not going to look so good in a year's time.

Re-cutting it properly (ie straight) is obviously the ideal solution, but if you want to cheat a little bit you could cut a small rebate (say 5 mm (3/16") square) along the whole length with a router and glue in a strip of matching timber to hide it or contrasting timber to make it a feature.

Ditto. As said re-cutting is the best option, hard work and delay in project but it will be on display for a long time to come. Something to be proud of.
