A new Forum masthead logo?
I have been giving some thought to the Forum masthead logo which, while descriptive, is hardly eye-catching. So I kicked the few remaining brain cells into action by the application of a gin and tonic and considered what might be a suitable substitute. First, of course, it must have a wood connection and should grab the attention. After a second application of brain stimulant, I came up with the following idea which I would put forward for our member's consideration. That is, the adoption of the Giant Weta as our symbol and for the following reasons;weta.jpg The Weta, like our forum members, loves wood. Fortunately, he likes his wood generally damp and rotten while I hold an opposite view so we rub-along together quite harmoniously and ignore each other's stash. In fact he's a good gauge in that, if he does start to take an interest in my wood I know it's time to check the storage conditions. I accept that he's not much to look at but there, I'm no oil-painting and you have to admit he grabs your attention. Sure he has a hard, spiky outer shell but he's neither aggressive nor venomous. Rather puts me in mind of SWMBO. Perhaps other members have ideas for a new logo and would like to share what and why they would nominate their choice? Cheers, Pete.

You only have a laugh once a year?!!!
China, It just occurred to me that you might be thinking the beastie in the picture is not real (hence the April Fool crack). I can assure you they are real although the ones around my property are about half the size of the one in the photo which was probably found in the bush.
The idea behind the post was just a lighthearted way to see what other (hopefully amusing) ideas members might have for a masthead logo.
Cheers, Pete

Two thoughts about the mast head.
I think that the "A" being made with a dove tail joint is clever and attractive.
Maybe a panel of pictures showing the finished work of forum members would entice more woodworkers to join?
Just thinking out loud. And that insect has to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen.LOL

Rich
Is that the ugliest you've seen?
How about this one?
Demodex.jpg
The Demodex and he lives on you and me: In fact almost everyone. In reality you may not have seen him as he is awfully small. He eats, lives and mates on your skin. Interestingly he does not defecate as he has no anus: That is until he dies at which point he pretty much explodes.
However, I am not suggesting we adopt him as a mascot. He is almost completely devoid of charisma, although he is arguably full enough of a certain substance to be a politician.

As a kid my daily after school chore was filling the woodbox in the kitchen and I'd come across a Weta from time to time. I'd smuggle them into the woodbox because mum was absolutely terrified of the ugly brutes. I thought I was pretty funny at the time. In defending themselves they raise their back legs and rip the spikes down your finger. I had heard of people eating wetas but not tried them myself.
Cheers,
Geoff.
