When To Let Go

Now I fully expect you all to think that I am entering into a serious and meaningful discussion on when to talk to a child about leaving home or when to walk away from a cherished relationship.

I am afraid that is not the case, but I do tend to hold onto things a trifle longer than I should.

Now the case in question is my work thongs and before any of you throw up in revulsion I should explain that these are my footwear and originally started life as my smart sandals. They were relegated to work thongs (still primarily for use on my feet) when I cut the ankle strap off: (I quite like the concept) of slipping into thongs. So they became my regular non-safety footwear all last summer and the summer before that.

However, all good things come to an end and so too the thongs. I was thinking of returning them to get my money back as unsuitable for purpose, but I don't recall now where they were bought. I think it may have been during the noughties )It may have been before that, but I felt that "noughties" perpetuated the theme) down in NSW.

So am I being too rash in discarding them?

The final straw is obvious in the last pic as stones and other ground based material was coming in from the underside. I could of course keep them a while longer and use the soles to de-clog the sanding belts of belt sanders and linishers.

All the best to my woodworking friends for the New Year and please post many threads so I don't feel obligated to top up the reading matter with more items of used clothing.

But I am slightly alarmed that your giving up the ghost on the sandals., have you heard the new buzz around town, re purposing?
I’m seeing lots of rubber an leather being just chucked in the bin(un less of course your gracious enough to mount the sandals
in a sealed frame an hang them above the front door.
Here lyes the foundation’s that carried my life for so many years)

But ,on a brighter point ,if you find yourself looking like Jesus,

I’m happy to have these expressed couriered up privately,not using that public provider.
They just in the last six months have been made comfortable.

We wouldn't throw up in revulsion Paul. But, of course, we can't smell them. As to whether they are ready for the bin I would refer you to the Brian Cadd song - YouTube - the salient line in the lyric being, "Let go, it ain't worth it if it hurts you."

They are looking somewhat tired be sure, but I don’t think you should give up them just yet. If you take a look down your back yard there is a 3-sided shed along with a container or two with some really good examples of items that more prudent folks had tossed away just because they thought that rusty steel, broken wood and bits missing meant fit only for scrap. You should take comfort in the knowledge that there may be literally tens of people worldwide who share your passion for recovering an etch under a couple scale using nothing more than wet-n-dry and a manic gleam in your eyeballs; if you keep that in mind then knocking up a replacement sole or two shouldn’t be too hard.

I for one am looking forward to the WIP!

Hehe. I was issued a pair of laced, high-ankle work-boots when I joined the SECV back in '81.

I don't rightly recall the brand name, but they were the best work-boots I've ever had. The SECV would issue workers a new pair every year, but the second year I was there they changed to Blundies which, IMO, weren't as good.

Naturally I wore the Blundies at work and kept the first pair for use around the house.

At the end, the soles were worn paper thin (but still good) and although I did have to be careful not to "flick" my foot when I walked so I didn't send the toe-caps flying across the room, they were otherwise perfect for when I was working on rooves. Lovely grip and damned comfortable!

I had to get rid of them 'bout 10 years ago when my lovely wife discovered they were older than she was...

Shame on you, I'm thoroughly disgusted with your attitude, after all the recommendations I have posted on the forum about the endless benefits of Sikaflex, I am disappointed that you haven't resoled the heels, if you did you would get a minimum another 10 years wear out of them providing you used some leather dressing compound on the uppers

You know those plastic clips that hold bread bags, I finally found a use for them. When your (actual) thongs pull through at teh front poke teh strap back through and apply one to it. Widens the area and stops it pulling through again.

So far I have used 2 of the 22000 I've hoarded over the years so I'm set for a while yet.

Those sandles are just broken in. If you are done with them send them up my way! I have some bread bags I can stuff into those soles...
