Water base finishes - keeping the gun clean

seems I am a bit of a pioneer using mirotone water base finishes - mirotone tell me they cant keep up with orders so there must be one or two users here -

any one got any tips on the best way to clean the gun? -
keeping build up from gathering?
removing residue?

Empty the pot and clean it with water....Fill the pot with clean water and spray onto a scrap bit of cardboard or paper until you are sure that it is only water coming out of the gun.

Out of curiosity, what type/brand of gun are you using and at what pressures?

Are you using any thinning agents eg like Flotrol or demineralised water or shooting straight from the tin?

Using star gravity feed minis with 1mm tips - may need to go 1.5 or 2mm
mirotone wb-8060 - havent started trialling it yet - doubt it would spray from the bottle its very thick - - unlike the target coatings em6000 I used years ago - used em6000 straight out of the tin
was going to use tap water - hadnt thought of using stuff like demineralised water or floetrol

Late to the party I know, but I wouldn’t expect to move that product through a 1.0 tip.
I would start at 1.4 but expect to use at 1.8

not surprised it is almost as thick as treacle - can you change tips on the Star mini's?

Well my Star Mini is an Evo-T and you change the setup on it just like any other of their guns.

What I don’t know is exactly what size you can buy. The air in pressure range is the same for both the minis and the full-size guns, so I expect it will have no trouble moving the treacle if you can find a 1.8mm.

I don’t know these things because I’ve only ever used the mini once, as I can’t figure out what you can do with it that you can’t do with a full size gun (appropriately turned down, of course).

I agree with Arron, I use a lot of different spray setups depending on job.

I'd definitely start with a 2.0

I wouldn't thin with water, but Floetrol. Love that stuff. The Paint Place will give you a very good price if you squeeze them a bit on it.

On cleaning, I always use the base thinner to clean (water for waters, solvent for oils) then a quick blat with some universal solvent regardless of material.

I tend to be a bit overboard with my jobs though... if Im going back to it in the next day or 3, I'll eave it all in the gun and cap off the air relief hole with some bluetack. If however, Ive finished the job, I'll always dismantle the gun, its pretty quick.


I do use Mirotone. Love it. The whites for furniture... mmmmm!

Does anyone think there is some way of making a wipe on poly using a water based poly?

If so, how and what proportions would you use?

I’ve been running a cup or two of brush and roller cleaner through the gun afterward, some stuff from Bunnings can’t remember the brand.
