A suitable covering for hot wooden steps

Has anyone had this issue, our dog is 14 and lost most of his sight but still gets around okay.
The outside wooden steps during our 40 degrees days get very hot and now that he can’t run up the stairs it takes home a couple of minutes to go up the 4 steps.
I looking for a suitable covering to use that won’t suck up the heat that I can wrap around them and screw into place.
I’ve thought about that outdoor green grass mating but it has a rubber backing and might be as hot or maybe those used carpet samples might do, get the woolen ones.

Anyone had a win with this?

Thanks for the suggestion but live in outback Australia and no store like that here but do have a carpet place. When you did your steps what product from Clarke’s rubber Di you use?

We used to use potato bags.

We had the same prob with out previous dog but fortunately there were only 5 steps. I found a crappy piece of ordinary old carpet and cut off a strip about 250 mm wide and screwed it to one side of the steps. It took a few goes for the old girl to work out what they were about and the carpet got dirty and grubby but that helped insulate the carpet. Unfortunately after few months later said pup passed away. We left the carpet on the steps for a few years until it started to disintegrated.

tack shade cloth onto steps or as mentioned non rubber recycled carpet.

Thanks for the suggestions and this morning I purchased 5 of the woolen carpet samples and went about fastening them tightly onto the steps. I’m also going to erect a temporary shade tarp over the area for a little extra protection.

02.11.19 Update - Carpet on the steps worked really well, the steps and concrete at 12 had to only be 25 degrees.

23.10.19 - Sadly Leo went over the rainbow, he was a 14 year old Bull Terrier.

Old age will eventually get the better of us all, RIP Leo Bubs.

Do you think the carpet samples may have been a bit too flash for him?
Always hard losing a mate.
