Wood identification

Hi everyone just picked up some old floor panels off of gumtree just wondering if anyone knows what kind of wood this is i thinks its a hardwood as ive hit it with a hammer a few times and its not left any marks on it

It 'looks' like oregon to me, but I've not seen that used in flooring before, so my guess would be baltic pine. But I am not familiar with timbers used up that way.

Those new pics are not of flooring(paneling), my guess is western red cedar.

The person said it was ripped up from flooring and used for the ceiling as well

Too many knots for WRC I think. When freshly cut or abraded WRC smells a fair bit like bananas. It sure looks like Douglas Fir (aka Oregon but only in Australia). Hemlock may be another possibility. DF also has a distinctive smell but I can't describe it to you other than "smells like DF".

Are you sure about that? You couldn't have hit it very hard! As it ages it gets a bit harder and more brittle but Douglas Fir is still very soft and WRC is even softer. If you go to the centre of the board in the first post, I'll wager you can mark the lighter areas with your fingernail.

That board looks like it is from almost the exact centre of the tree - the end grain will tell you that. It is quarter sawn on both sides but the middle is backsawn (hence the larger grain pattern). It could only transition like that if it was one board away from being the centre of the tree.

Im denailing them and the hammer isnt marking it but after seeing your post i gave one a really good wack and it dented it is douglar fir expensive just trying to work out if i got a good deal or not

This looks like Douglas Fir (what we call Oregon)

Just researched douglas fir and it seems to fit really well

This above looks more like a Pine ... although the second / lower image above, with more reddish wood, does look a bit like WRC (Western Red Cedar)

This is based on eyeballing pics provided. When colours are distorted and one can't handle or sniff a cut end of wood guessing is a "MUGS GAME"

Haha yeah alot of the wood is rough to the touch and it has a distinct smell to it i cant describe it tho

Yea thats true i cant quite place my finger on the smell i knocked a knot out of it and it has a strong smell just trying to work out how to describe it

The Douglas Fir (if that's what it is) that the board in the first pic. was cut from would be considered hardly bigger than a weed and not worth felling or milling. Consequently IMHO it's not Douglas Fir. How old was the house? Baltic Pine is a possibility or it could even be Cypress Pine, the knots and splits of one of the boards pictured is very reminiscent of Cypress. Cypress is also pretty hard and the trees are much smaller than the usual Pine or Eucalypt used for timber.
