3D printer request.

Where in dang blazers do I put this question....
recently say a 3D printer producing a english mini cooper about 1/12 - 1/18 scale the plan was supposedly 'borrowed from the 'net.

If anyone does 3D printing and can help me

Chris, I would like to find the plan, then find someone who could produce it but als would like to knopw what sort of $$$ it would cost.

Ive really hurt the bank acc this week. and she aint happy. $800 approx on PVC pieces from WA for dust extraction, (although it now appears they will get the manufacturer to freight direct to me, rather than Vic-WA-SA Adelaide - Pt Lincoln.

Also met a suicidal kangaroo on monday night who decided the drought down here was too hard to live with so end it all was his decision. Unfortunately he decided my ute was the victim. I had demolished my previous ute 18 months ago, overloaded and greasy wet roads and bimbo in front hits the brakes for sheer 'ell of it, It was still cheaper to buy & freight parts to me than pay excess. I need a win.

I also suggest you link to the exact ones you mean, as the number displayed per row changes depending on your monitor size (my main monitor shows 8/row, my laptop shows 6/row)

Tonto, we need a bit more info on exactly what you want to end up with:

Briefly, a 3D printer takes a shape and creates it by building up layers of molten plastic. How detailed the final result is depends on the capabilities of the printer, size of the model, and how thick each layer of plastic is.
The thicker the layers, the faster the print, but the lower the detail. So you could build something up in 0.1mm layers, and it would be detailed, but might take 16 hours to print. Layers of 0.35mm would produce a less detailed model, but might only take a few hours to print.

You can only print a model as large as the print bed and height allow - the more expensive the printer, the larger the print area, and the more detail it can produce (as a rough guide).

Prints are single colour (unless you have a more advanced printer).

As you're building something up in layers, hollow shapes become an issue - you can't lay a layer of molten plastic over thin air. There are ways around this (printing with 'support' material that you then remove afterwards. For example the mirrors of the mini hang out from the side of the car - they'd probably need to be printed on support.

The printer needs a file that it can understand...

So, the model pictures above are 3D CAD files - they're just files that a computer program can read and manipulate. They can be scaled, so the model can be a few centimeters, or a few meters.

We would need to take the CAD file, and convert it to an STL file, which is the format that 3D printer software understands. The 3D printer software then takes the model and 'slices' it into layers that it can send to the printer.
To do this, we'd need the original CAD file in a format that can be converted to an STL file, as well as the size you'd want the final model to be.
You also need to understand that the detail might be limited.

As an example, here's a link to a 3d-printed car: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:587719. (The car body has been printed in orange, and then the black bits will have been printed in another print. This adds complexity as you'd need to split the CAD file into orange bits and black bits before converting and slicing, and then glue the bits together.)

It's all do-able, with varying degrees of effort.

There are also professional 3D-printing companies that will take you desires and make them concrete. They can often produce much higher resolution models, multi-coloured models, and so on... at a price!

Tonto you will need to register an account with that website and download the DXF file. I'll have a look at it and let you know if I can print it.

It will need to be a model which can be easily split to components for printing. I will print with supports and you can remove these supports and clean it up and assemble. I can only do a single colour (currently its grey) - therefore to get it looking nice it probably has to be painted.

In terms of detail I can go down to 0.05mm layer thickness. I dont know if the layer lines will be visible at this thickness as I've never printing in that amount of detail but it may require sanding - I normally print at 0.2mm thickness as I'm not printing models or anything - more functional things I dont really care about how it looks

Why don’t you just buy a diecast model of one that is built and ready to go? Loads of them on eBay for sale.

I have over 30 already ranging from 1/12 down to 1/87 scales all Coopers.. Plastic and diecast just thinking something different but its looking to difficult.

picnic basket!? picnic basket in a Cooper go wash your mouth out, that is sacrilege. mind you a do know that beach mats were very useful for outside extra curricular activities in secluded spots.
At one time in my younger years I had 5 Minis in parents yard. from
stock standard Mini Cooper S to a
circuit racer to a well it couldnt get rougher to a
highly modified cooper, running 1375 motor, 5 speed imported gear box, 2 seats only (from an early Cessna aircraft plus its landing lights, had them wired up to triple tone air horns. Also for extra fun had a cassette player mounted between seats with 20 sec tapes from cows moing, car brakes locking up big time, wolf whistles, stream train sounds, dang we were idiots in those days...but seemed like innocent fun.
