Out of interest, because I think I'm a few mm too think, what material for the top would you use and how thick ?

Initially I will be making the top from MDF with a melamine surface and trying to match the thickness of the original top. I want the top to be removable so that if I decide to lash out the big bucks and get a cast Iron top made I can just remove the MDF version and retro fit the cast one without having to modify the cabinet. The Mitre & "T" slots will be Aluminium Extrusions from Carbatec. I am a fair way off building this mind you,...so the design may change before I get it done.

I used high quality form ply to extend the top on my table saw, using a router to remove the finish on the edges and under neath to facilitate the gluing of ribs etc. screwed through the top a then filled the countersinks with PlastiBond
it is very solid has been about 5 years

Thanks hiroller.....the McPhersons Catalogue shows the 8” saw with the tables but it’s interesting to see in the add that the tables were optional.... I am yet to find something to show the side tables on the 12” saw....it’s obvious that the side tables were an option throuout their production though
