Mrs P. commented recently that the gas cook top was giving trouble again, one burner refusing to ignite, a few with bad flame shapes etc. I have had several attempts in the past to sort out the problems and while I did fix them it was only temporary so I offered to buy a new one. This is where the job started to expand like a tropical cyclone on steroids.

While at the store after deciding on the cook top (we'll give you $600 of cookware if you buy this one) she reminded me that we might look at new TV's so we wandered over and had a look. Now I am the first one to admit that I like new technology and am an absolute sucker for it so half the fault was mine but Sony have some responsibility as well because they have brought out a new TV with no speakers, they use the screen as the speaker and it is awesome, so we bought one + a wall mount.

Meanwhile back at the ranch when we built this house it was wired with a full video/internet/phone network, over the years some of it has fallen into disuse or can't be used because of problems and we had been talking about ripping it all out because of the coming of the NBN towards the end of the year. The decision was taken to upgrade the whole thing and simplify it because these days you don't need half of it with wireless phones, computers etc. That will entail ripping the gyprock off one wall, moving all the computer network stuff/server stuff to a new home, running cat 6 wiring where it is needed etc and wall mounting a 40KG TV. We will hide the new TV box, DVD player, Foxtel box on the wall behind the TV to eliminate wire runs etc. I also had to get the sparky to move and add a few GPO's.

To go with the TV we had to upgrade the DVD player, wireless bridge, new network switch, Foxtel box and add a Telstra TV box so Foxtel was visible on other TV's through the house. Mind you I literally never watch TV because after 25 years of shift work I have fallen out of the habit and would rather read a book.

All because the gas cook top was a bit dodgy.

It's a very slippery slope your on, just when its all finished she will say 'now about (insert appropriate item here) we were thinking of replacing/updating.....

Matt, the shed has cat 6 cable and conduit all over the floor. My favorite job to hate is terminating cat 6 cables and I have about 15 to do if they all go right the first time and that never happens. Eight of those have to be done on site in the roof cavity which adds even more adventure to it.

But will the new gas cook top fit in the opening of the old cook top. If it is bigger not so bad as you can always make a hole bigger, depending on material this can be easy to call in an expert. However if the opening is smaller and will not be covered, then you might have another problem to deal with.

It was close but the jig saw made it fit even better. I resisted in buying a small one as the whole kitchen bench would have had to be remade and the credit card was in a major state of shock as it was.

Shoulda bought the cooker online....the delivery costs would have extraordinarily cheap....comparatively.

Chris, did I tell you about the time we went to Harvey Norman to purchase a couple of DVDs, and came out with a new TV? That was an impulse purchase several years ago that I am not allowed to live down at home.

Yep, we went down a similar path. Two years ago we needed a new fridge-freezer. Our old one finally kicked the bucket after 35 years. Can't complain. However, the new fridge-freezer would not fit into the space of the old, which led to me rebuilding the kitchen (remember this?). And new appliances - cannot build a new kitchen without new appliances ... fancy ceramic cooktop and new extractor ... we wandered past the TVs and they were having a special on LG OLED. One came home with us. Rob Lee and his wife came to stay with us 6 months later. When he got home to Canada, he wrote to say that he had bought the same TV.

On a more serious note about one thing leading to another a mate went to the doctor with a sore foot.
The doctor looked at his foot and then asked what was wrong with the left side of his face/neck. Answer
was that a couple of teeth needed attention. Doctor, not satisfied with the answer, took a sample of
flesh for pathology.

Result was cancerous tissue so teeth were extracted and cancer treatment begun.

18 months down the track and things are fine. A stroke of luck and a very observant doctor led to a very positive outcome.

Now when you "need" to update that "insert machine name here" in the shed it will be more difficult for the minister for finance to decline your business plan.

But perhaps like most of us you are still well in debt in the brownie points balance sheet.

Don't gas cooktops have rings that just pop out and replaced for $25..….
