Default Hall table brass need cleaning and protection

I recently bought a table base of Edwardian style. I'm looking for advice of how to clean and protect the brass without damaging the wood, wood finish or removing the brass. My only thoughts are brass brush and then spray on clear.

    Hi,
In days of old, the maid would have thick paper templates to fit around each brass so she could lay into them with Brasso, with out damaging the polished wood.
    Regards

Yeah, I like living as a whole human, don't think I'll mention this to the maid
Maybe I could use a thin card scraper or two as template

Two inch masking tape cut to shape with a scalpel? Should be able to angle the scalpel in at ~45° so it doesn't cut the wood (too much).

I would not be attacking it with a brush just clean with warm soapy water thoroughly dry and apply wax.
