Hi All - new at woodworking, low skill but very enthusiastic! Did woodworking and metalwork at school (half heartedly) and had a dad that loved woodworking and carving, etc. & now at just over 50 yo, we've bought a fixer-upper house and surprisingly (to me) I'm enjoying the process of fixing it up, which includes lots of woodworking and other dyi/handyman opportunities. So joining the forum to learn and ask questions and find much needed resources. Quite intimidating to start with something new but quite keen to learn and try things out. Have some cheap, bought, inherited & borrowed, and odds and sods equipment and have started with collecting and dismantling pallets to knock some projects together.

    Cheers

Welcome to the forums. There are quite a few of us here in Brisbane and surrounds, though we haven't been social with get-togethers like the southerners. We're still happy to give some local advice for suppliers etc. Tongue-in cheek here: if you like Grange you like a quality red wine, but have to have the budget! Maybe you mean the suburb though!

In terms of budget and tools etc. - always an exciting subject for new woodworkers. We all tend to start with enthusiasm to amass lots of tools (some never lose that) but my advice is to be careful. There are a lot of cheap tools that look flash but don't really deliver the goods. If you want to improve your skill set then the very best way is to enrol in a course in hand-tool skills. I know that you may well be a power tool person, but learning hand tool skills can really help to develop your woodwork. There are some good teachers here in Brisbane. One of the best skills to acquire first is how to sharpen your tools. I don't do Facebook at all but there is a site on it https://www.facebook.com/RmSchoolOfWoodworkingPtyLtd for someone I have a lot of respect for and who teaches such a course at Greenslopes.

When possible it is better to purchase second hand quality gear on these forums marketplace or similar. The Marketplace can provide some great, high quality gear for the right price. You can get really good items in full working order for much less than new. I have sold through the forums as I traded up in quality and everyone I sold to got a good unit at a bargain price, often half the new price.

If you want to follow a subject/thread on these forums always make sure that you subscribe to it.

Overall, Have Fun, woodworking can be a very rewarding hobby and you have plenty of years left to develop and enjoy your skills.
