    Default Security door problem

    Dear all,

I have decided to tackle another problem that I've been putting off. Our security door's handle does not spring back into position, it sits there limp (there's a line there but I won't touch it). This happened a while ago and the next door neighbour pulled the handle apart, he then did something to the spring and it worked for a while. Neighbour has moved on so I have to try and figure this out for myself. Anyone know what I can do and if it is a spring problem where I can get a replacement from. Any thoughts appreciated.

    G'Day Tiger,
try the local locksmith, but buy a full replacement handle set, usually it comes with a new barrel and keys, just use the new handle set and your old barrel. It is advisable to take the old one with you to make sure you get the right type as there are several on the market. I've been in this situation before and learnt to replace it rather than fiddle around for a short term fix...

What Savage says is probably the best option. Pulling it apart is usually only a bandaid fix and it will soon go the same way again as well some locks can't be fixed.

I worked in the security door industry for several years and we always found it best to replace the lock. Like he says there are so many different types as well as many types of security doors. The better ones are the ones fitted inside the frame of the door.

Bunnings do carry a few Security door locks but you would be better going to a security door manufacturer as they usually carry a bigger range of locks.

Tony, take the lock to the locksmith on Springvale Road in Nunawading ( in front of the pedestrian crossing between Whitehorse Rd and the railway crossing ) and ask him.

I have always found him very helpful and reliable and cheaper than Bunnings for quality locks and I would follow his advice.

    Thanks, boys.

Took your advice and replaced the handle.

Peter, visited your contact in Nunawading and bought a handle set. Door looks almost new and did for around $40.

    Thanks, again.
