When leaving work late, you will go unnoticed.
When you leave work early, you will meet the boss in the carpark.

Forgive your enemies, but never, ever forget their names.
The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naïve forgive and forget; the wise forgive but never forget.

And the answer is: "I was on a conference call at 04:30."

Make sure the boss is not around, leave early and hope no one calls.

Divert your work phone to your mobile and you can just stay home.

Years ago I worked for a company and the area manager was a control freak always ringing everyone on their mobile for the stupidest of reasons so one day we diverted all our phones (10 staff) to his, after about 4 hrs of answering himself he gave up, problem solved

One office where I worked the phone system permitted phones to be diverted. I would divert my office phone to my home phone when expecting customers to call after hours. The voice mail system could be set to override the diversion to go directly to voice mail.

Sometimes my manager would call my office intending to leave a voice mail but then demanding to know why I was still in the office way after hours. I tried to explain how the telephone system worked. It would have been easier to explain to a brick. After about 2 years I gave up trying to explain.
