Stephenson's Rocket
Well I have completed a cleanup of the backyard - so it must be time to commence my next project.
For a number of years now have wanted build my version of Stephenson's Rocket, but unfortunately couldn't find details of the locomotive drive train mechanism. My mate Fletty (who has been on leave) has graciously taken photos for me whilst over at the Museums in the UK so I now should be able to do a decent job of the replica. (Thanks Alan)
From Wikipedia - here are a few notes regarding "Rocket"
"Stephenson's Rocket was an early steam locomotive of 0-2-2 wheel arrangement. It was built for, and won, the Rainhill Trials held by the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1829 to choose the best design to power the railway.
Rocket was designed by Robert Stephenson in 1829, and built at the Forth Street Works of his company in Newcastle upon Tyne."
My version will be 1/6th scale. I have worked out the calculations and the main datums to work off will be the boiler diameter (mine 162 mm) and the main drive wheel (mine 245mm diameter).
I will be working totally off photos and although a much earlier locomotive than the Stirling - I think there will be lots of challenges with the details and the exposed mechanical components.
Looking forward to this build and hope I can gain your interest.
As the wheels will be one of my main datum points - that is where it will all start.

Count me in for the ride. I dont understand the 0-2-2 wheel thing even looking at the link but I'm bound to learn alot in the ride.

Never mind a front row seat, I am happy to stand on the footplate with a top hat. And I'll lift my hat to you Keith.
A couple of things that may help or confuse you. Over the years I believe the angle of the cylinders changed. They started at about 45 degrees from the track but at some point I believe the engine was rebuilt with a lower angle.
The valve mechanism is similar to that of one of you earlier engines. What you will probably find missing is brakes!
Looking forward to the build.

Hi All,
"Rocket" is a bit different than the other locos I have built - wheels are thicker - need to laminate my timbers together before I turn them in the lathe. The width I require on the outer rim is 28mm (to scale). The inner rim will be closer to 35mm across the centre hub.
For both inner and outers I am gluing 19mm pine together and will then turn accordingly. These are the bits that everyone will see first so it is my main datum point (at this stage) Have sketched up the wheels and the spokes. The main drive wheels on this loco were 4ft 8" - My wheel diameters are 237mm.
Think this will be an enjoyable build with lots of mechanical components to make
Regards
Keith

Appreciate your comments - been down with the flu. Got it off the wife
Started turning the main drive wheels. Bit different than the later loco wheels. Taking a bit longer than normal. Should be onto the inner spokes section tomorrow.
Again thanks for your comments

Thanks Derek,
The wheels just fit with the swing of the Woodfast lathe. Using a faceplate, Coming up OK - Will post some photos tomorrow (hopefully) Was tied up with Lawn Bowls today.
