    Default Gday from Ipswich

    Hi everyone

I figure I might as well give a basic rundown on my wood working history! basically been working with wood since I was a kid, due to the fact my dad was a carpenter and hobbyist cabinet builder. Although when younger my involvement was more helping him hold things or what ever with his projects by late primary school, early high school I was making my own hand crafted what ever's out of scrap woods, normally using very basic equipment, ie hammer, hack saw, sandpaper, concrete step... , in high school I got to do wood work and although didnt keep it going at school, did at home. Eventually my old man handed my his own tools, things he used during his working live from the 50's through 90's, some of which is even older, he takes car (to some extent) of his tools. Im now 30 with my own daughter who loves working with wood as well, I am the much younger sibling of the family, all the rest were grown up when I came along, explains his 1950s working life, although he did start in a saw mill at just 12. Anyway, I have gone on to make all sorts of things, generally using pine of what ever hard wood bunnies would sell, making benches, house or yard projects, model RC airplanes, boats, full size boats, reptile enclosures and more. Generally because I have different hobbies, I realize the one thing that I do is wood work, and I love it, and now I also keep bees I do even more constant wood work. I am going to make my shed more wood work friendly again, going to making a bench, I have supplied myself with some extra tools like table saw and new router, finish nailer.

I live in Ipswich Qld, just west of Brisbane, and as I said my main timber supply is bunnies or re using wood, say from a tear down or pallet. I would like to use some nicer woods, such as ironbarks or mahogany or what ever but I am new to all that and dont know what to use for what exactly and what exactly they look like fully. Other than beekeeping gear, I dont have huge plans on what to make, Ill just go with what I want or need, but one thing I would like to build is an end grain cutting board, Im hoping to use some sort of red coloured wood and rich dark brown wood, but not sure which to would be be best for this that is available to me? also I am struggling to find places other then bunnies who sell woods other than pine in my area (Brisbane, west Brisbane, Ipswich and surrounds), I do know of one place in Sumner Park but have yet to see what they stock. Any way, thanks in advance for letting me be apart of the community.

    Cheers Wayne

    Welcome to the forum.

I used to pickup a lot of nice pieces of wood from the recycle centers when I was living in Sydney. It certainly was not enough to build large pieces or any two items the same. Then there were the hard garbage collection days that yielded some nice pieces of wood.

You might already be aware of this when looking for timber in the large hardware stores avoid the pieces with the pit of the tree in them. If were going to used them in a veggie patch or something that is going to have a hard outside life then does not matter too much.

    Hi Wayne welcome

A local lad eh well I am only new to Ipswich. You as a young lad should know all the haunts.

In just under 12 months I have found little local wood supply Lobb Street Mill which I have yet to visit seems to have a good selection. Sadly Masters is no longer they had far superior selection of timbers to Big Green shed.

I am sure you'll find what your after at Melany.

Crowie and Christos mentioned council clean ups, as you'll know we don't get regular road side clean up here I miss scrounging BUT it so nice to NOT see trash strewn up and down the streets from those scroungers who don't give a toss about ripping boxes, bags etc open.

Listen for chainsaws just hope they are decent sized tree's

Thanks everyone. Yes the Lobb St mill seems a good choice. I keep intending on checking it out. There is also a demo yard on Kruger Parade Collingwood Park. I did have a huge block of hardwood that was used for a million things over the last 20 plus years I have now cut down for a Joiners Mallet, not sure what it is but will be asking in the ID section.

    Cheers
