Thornley Bench Saw Reno
Ok picked up a Thornley Bench saw and a Hyco 6" Jointer on the weekend. Both are going to need a fair bit of work but I think they will look awesome in the end. As these will be my first Machine Renos, I will be looking for guidance from the members on here. Here are some pics to get the ball rolling.

I will continue this thread for the Thornley Reno and start a new one for the Hyco when that Happens.
I have added the two badges to the Australian Machinery Thread to keep that part all together.

Just wondering if anyone has any info, catalogues etc they may be able to share on these old Thornley Saw benches? I have searched high and low and other than being mentioned in various threads on this forum I am yet to find anything.
I'll get some better pics once I get it unloaded, but here are a few from when I picked it up.

Found this Thornley MBT Combo on Fleebay.... just wondering if anyone knows the history of Thornley ie the progression from the saw that I have and the transition to MBT..... Beside the label they obviously still used the same knobs as my machine. By the way I am not interested in this machine, was interested in the knowledge of Thornley Machines.... also one of these knobs is broken on my machine ie more opportunities to locate one

Do you know when these were made? I have ordered a copy of the 1924 catalogue from the National Library...not sure if these were from that era or not. Started pulling it apart today and already found a few bits missing..although I think the guy I got it off will still have them but he just couldn't find them when I picked it up

I just assumed Sydney or Melbourne in the 20's or 30's. I bought mine from a family who had turned to demolition. They also had a saw that would run off a tractor drive..It took a lot of RP7 to get mine moving. IF you can't get the parts let me know. It might be time for me to surrender mine to someone ready to do the right thing and bring it back to life. I'm outside Brisbane where are you?

I'm up in Rockhampton......I got mine from a guy on the Sunshine Coast..apparently he used to make beer crates with it. If you do decide to part with yours let me know. As long as yours has the bits that I am missing I might be interested

Ok.. Made a start pulling the old girl apart over Easter...... One thing that I am unsure about is the Motor. It looks original but is a very heavy old 2HP GMF motor that would need a lot of work to get it back to working condition. I wouldn't do this myself, but is it worth it or should I just get a new 1 1/2 HP motor that would be lighter and probably cheaper in the long run?

Mine is a 5HP and a massive frame. Personally I always planned to change over to a modern 3HP 1 phase motor.

5hp seems an over kill ".do you think they need such a large motor? I was thinking 2hp was more than enough.

Hmmm ... need to go back and look at the size of the blade again. I thought it was about 20 inch giving a heavy load when cutting hard wood

I think your saw must be way bigger than mine.... I don't have a blade but from my measurements I am thinking a 12" blade Max.... Do you have any Pics to share?
