Yes, I think they evolved because professional shops in particular will often have a range of different sanders, so they obviate the need to stock all the different patterns in the various grits. Also makes them a little cheaper to produce by having only one die and longer production runs.
A slight down side is that there is more potential for a hole to be on the edge of the disc, possibly leading to tearing in the paper versions. I've had no problems with this but Bushmiller cannot get them to last on his Metabo - we are yet to determine why. No problem at all with the film discs though. They are stupidly tough, and only a little more expensive (maybe 20%). Given that they last about 1½-2x the life of paper discs they are a cheaper proposition. Grits 400+ are ceramic abrasive. The range is 40-4000, but oddly they don't have 120, 180 or 320, so I have to use paper for them.
