    Default New guy from USA

Hi All -- just checking in to this woodworking forum. I was drawn here by Derek Cohen who linked this site for a discussion about BU/BD hand planes. Seems like a lively discussion group here. I'm a retired newspaper photographer, 18 years now, and my screen name is based on my very first photography job in South Dakota and the "pix" naturally represents pictures. I live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

I am slowly converting to hand tool use because first, I enjoy the acquisition, restoration and use of vintage tools and second, because my shop is relatively small. I recently sold my table saw to make room although I still have a band saw and drill press. I also do some turning.

Hi Dakotapix and welcome to the forum. There are a lot of members who are making the same journey from noisy machines to the zen of hand tools and, like all forums, some discussion topics get a more passionate response than others. Sharpening, the microscopic theory of cutting and submicroscopic theory of dust all have their passionate and diametrically opposed devotees. Enjoy the journey....

Welcome, we need some more people that are turning away from noisy tools. I must sell some of mine too. The saw bench is only used as a bench to stack stuff on. though I do have a few chainsaws.
    I am learning, slowley.

Thanks for the welcome, folks. I should have taken a photo of my table saw top before cleaning it off to move it out of the shop. I might have used it once or twice a year in recent years but it became just another flat surface to store other stuff.

By the way, Australia to me still represents one of those exotic countries I always wished I could visit. I spent my Army time in Germany in the fifties and visited the UK several times but now that I'm 80 that kind of travel won't happen. I'll see you down in the Hand Tool forum...also the Sharpening one too.

G'Day & Welcome to the Great Southern Land and to a top forum "Dakotapix".
There are quite a few members from North American and the rest of the world.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.....
Cheers from On Top DownUnder, crowie
