Attaching images to private messages
When I try to attach a pic to a private message the menu only allows me to select it from a URL. This is not the case for images in posts. Why is there a difference?

That's interesting. I never tried sending an image via PM.
Might need to bring this to the attention of Admin.

I thought admin monitored this thread.
I also just found out the the Manage Attachments function for posts only seems to let you add pictures, not delete them. Odd.

I have never been able to send attachments with PM, assumed it was part of the system. If I need to, I will PM someone my email address and ask them to send me a msg there, tell them what I am trying to do, then send the attachment that way. Has worked Ok for me for 10 yrs or so.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

If you have the pic in an album then copy the BB code (on the right, underneath the pic) and then just paste that into the PM wherever you want the pic.

I can't follow that - not sure what you mean by BB code. If i try copy/paste the paste option isn't there.

Peter,
Tried that, but it didn't work - just left the URL as text. I have probably not understood your instructions Peter.
I start out with my pictures in a folder or the desktop - I don't usually use a browser to view them.

I may be missing something, but what is wrong with using email to send pictures?
Just ask your recipient for his/her email address.

Nothing wrong with email - just involves another step. And since it works for posts I thought it might also work for PM's - why does the function assume you have a URL?

Whilst in your browser click on your settings and then on attachments in the column on the left side near the bottom. This will show all the pictures that you have already uploaded as attachments.
Open the picture that you want to use in a new window of your browser, in Chrome I use control and click on the heading of the attachment. This will show the picture in another new window.
Then in your pm copy first the URL of the window with the picture, then click the insert image button and insert the URL that you copied into the little insert box and okay. The forum will do the rest.
Hope that helps.
Fred using an email is possible but that is like taking a train to make a journey rather then hop in the car. Rather cumbersome.
Peter.

You'll need to address this question to the developers of vBulletin, the software this forum uses.
But if you want to be able to send your photos via PM and not email then you need to follow FF's advice, ie put them in a place that you can access via a URL or similar link.
In this case FF suggests storing your pics in an album on this forum, if you the open that pic in the album you will get 2 links underneath that pic, a URL and a BB code, in this this an [IMG] [/IMG] code.
Pasting either one of these in your PM will do the trick, I have sent you a PM with the URL link.
You can also store your photos in an online photo hosting site such as Photobucket or Flicker and get the URL and BB links from there.
All of these options involve extra work though, which you have already said you don't want, so maybe using email isn't such a bad option?

I fully agree with you Peter, but both your suggestion and Brett's, on which I have expanded, assume that the photo is already uploaded somewhere on the internet, be it via the forum or an online photo sharing site.
If I read Chris' question correctly he is looking to attach photos stored on his computer to a PM. That is only possible using email AFAIK.
