Need to buy a new operating system for home computer.
Will Windows XP Professional x64 Edition work or do I need to stick with XP Home?

If you have a 64bit processor then Windows XP x64 is for you. If you haven't then it won't work.
You need one of the following processors.

Ms Grunt uses XP Home on her laptop and I have XP Pro. I don't notice any real difference. XP Home has worked without missing a beat.
They are essentially the same operating system with a few bits turned off in XP Home.Photo Gallery

I use 'Home'. No serious problems but it can go to sleep if used for more than a week without logging the user off and back on.

Yup... XP Pro for business uses where you need to connect to a Security Domain etc. For home use XP Home is fine, the networking is basic peer to peer stuff, not many people run Windows Server2003 etc on their home networks
