Hello and seeking good local timber source
Hello all, new to the forum.
I am an engineer and always trying to work at something around the house. Baby, work and maintenance has not allowed me enough time to explore a desire to build proper furniture. I've built inbuilt wardrobes and kitchens etc but nothing to get into detailed joints and fun stuff. The garage is a mess with tools and I'm wanting to get my teeth into a projec to build a nice tool cabinet that will allow me to develop skills on joints in the framing and drawers.
I am hoping you can offer advise on a good local timber source for me. I am Thinking of building this cabinet using a mix of Tassie Oak for the frame and panel sides/back and Merbau for the drawers. I have the Merbau offcuts from decking I was going to dress through the thicknesser and build the drawers from that. This is a learning project for me rather than a center piece in the the house
I don't have any material for the frame and panels and open to suggestions. I did think of getting structural Taz Oak and dressing it in the thicknesser. I was hoping there was a good timber source close to me in Heidelberg Vic (good choice or new and reclaim timber at reasonable price).
Any advise / suggestions welcome. Thanks

Rachel
Hello I am new to this posting. Forgive me if I make errors.
I have a fair bit of quality old redgum! sawn and stacked in my dairy.
I live in nsw. Down on the coast. Near Bega.
Sounds like you would enjoy using it. I can't transport. But if you want it
I can send a picture?
sorry I won't sell it. It's freely available. To anyone who wants to make stuff.
Just a thought can I donate timber to the men's sheds? As a gift?

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Paul".
There are a heap of members in & around Melbourne as well as across the rest of Victoria..
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [work in progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork.
Cheers, crowie
PS _ Keep an eye out on the forum announcements for Melbourne GTG as it's a great way to connect with folk plus the Working with Wood Show is on in Melbourne in a couple of months & the forum usually has an information stand [kindly supported by our benevolent director]....
ALSO - Add a new thread in General ot Timber on the timber source question, you'll gain a wider audience and thus more answers....
