    Default G'day from Perth WA

    Hi all,

Me and my wife are planning on starting an owner builder project in the next 18months. I'm not a builder by trade, in fact I don't have a trade, but I enjoy solving problems. I am a firm believer that one can achieve whatever they put their minds to, so long as they proceed with caution and find the right advice along the way. This is where the lovely people on this forum come in. We have a design, I'm sure it will change as we go, but its going to be two story house with a skillion roof , and we both really want large chunky exposed roof beams. I'm thinking there may be a mix of steel and timber framed walls in order to hold the weight of large timber beams (possibly jarrah) something I'm not sure about at all. So basically at stage, we are keeping an eye out for toughened and/or laminated glass, old doors, and large timber beams, slowly stock piling materials. I am honing my wood working skills on smaller projects in order prepare my self for the tough road ahead. My old man was a carpenter and I watched him build two houses as I was growing up, I'm hoping its in the blood!

Welcome to the forum Gabe .
My Grandfather built his own house in the 20`s and 30`s , my father built his own hose in the 50`s and 60`s and I built my own house in the 80`s and 90`s so it can carry on in the genes ,I had no trade and learnt as I went along remembering things that my father had done , he was an electrician by trade and his father was a boilermaker welder, all I can say is" go for it ", the end result is is a feeling worth the experience if you know what I mean.

It sounds like you are taking on a very big project. I would not be able to advise you on much in terms of building just moral support. As with everything in life one step(task) at a time.

Hi Gabe and welcome from Kalbarri.
My Grandfather was builder and I loved to go into his workshop where all those wonderful tool were.
I built our house in Geraldton starting in 1983, it took a few years as we ere both working full-time.
It was worth the drama in the long run.
    Have fun with your project.
    Bob.
