LEST WE FORGET - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.....

Today we remember the fallen men and women of the wars – many of whom lied about their age so they could fight for their country.

I'm amazed it wasn't on the heading
To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

Growing up in Brooklyn it was known as Armistice Day. I forget which president changed the name to Veterans Day.

Today, the 11th, (We're behind the times on this half of the planet.) I had to do some shopping. As I was walking through the shopping center a couple of Veterans were selling the classic red poppy. (Made from paper and wire.) I almost walked past the table before I realized it. I made a small contribution and acquired a poppy.

To me, what is remarkable is that there were a couple of veterans selling the poppies here in California. The culture in New York is such that on busy streets there would be veterans offering the poppies. It might be every block or two a veteran would be selling the poppies. The culture in California is so automobile centric that we just don't see veterans offering the poppies. This is probably the first poppy I've been able to acquire in 20 or 30 years.

Back in school in Brooklyn, you weren't cool if you didn't have a poppy. The week of Armistice Day (then) it was the norm for all the kids to wear a poppy on their shirt or blouse in school.

And why the poppy? Just read Flanders Fields.

    We aren't forgetting.

    Remembrance day got the mention

    In the local rag,

    On the local radio station,

    On the local TV station

And even at school as I passed by the kids were out on the parade ground heads bowed.

    Were are not forgetting.

    REMEMBRANCE DAY
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.
    Lest we forget

The Above was supposed to be at the top of the forums yesterday but for some reason it didn't appear.

Unfortunately I wasn't around or able to do anything to fix it until it was much too mate last night.

    Cheers - Neil

I feel it would help if more regular recognition were given to service members in the media and other areas of public attention. Two years ago I took my family to California on holiday; whilst at SeaWorld before the big Shamu show the announcer requested that all service members, both current and past, from US and "US Allies" to please stand up. She then requested that all members of the audience show their appreciation and respect by way of applause, which was very enthusiastically given. I would love to see something like that occur over here, as would my daughter who still reckons I'm a coward for not standing up at SeaWorld...!

Engineering is the profession of the achievers, not the showy Chief.....But I like the sentiment; I've heard it said that the Australian public opinion of the ADF is waning....Cheers, crowie
