Stating your State?

Is it at all possible, that when members join this forum, that under location, they state the town/city/suburb and STATE, that they are in, as when they ask for help, or have something for sale, that we can see where they are please?
Some members have Australia or Eastern Coast, which makes it hard to distinguish their location.
I realise some people want to remain private, but it helps to know where they are. Your thoughts on this please?

I have seen quite a few new members with 'Australia' as their location, and in their first post mention the town or suburb in their introductory spiel. Doesn't make sense to me.
I would much prefer to see the town and state, or suburb and city or general area and city as a standard. On a recent trip through Victoria, I came across many towns and suburbs which are also in NSW or other states, such as Richmond, Heathcote, Carlton, Winton, Hamilton, Avoca, Beaconsfield, Camperdown, Maryborough, Queenscliff, Portland and the list goes on and on. Not to mention Perth, Tasmania or Campbelltown in either NSW, Victoria or Sth.Aust.

Talk about confusing if one isn't fairly specific in their location. Our friends overseas could be more specific than just USA or England etc. At least a state in USA helps the mental picture, particularly if they are in the far north where snow and freezing conditions give us Aussies sweltering in 40 deg C some sort of comfort.

It is lovely to see posts where someone mentions that they were born in or used to live in a certain area, and another forumite chimes in and says " I used to live in the next street" or similar etc. or a member asks for a bit of help with a task, and a fellow forumite replies that he is in the next suburb and may be able to help out.

I appreciate members protecting their privacy and not wanting to advertise their tools etc. to potential thieves, just don't be too specific with your location.

Maybe I'm just nosy or curious.

While I might say I live in Richmond or Emerald - you would still need the state to find me.

Some of this could be because new members are not familiar with forums and are not sure what to put in as their location and tend to be a bit vague just to be safe initially. The problem is that once you enter your location you cannot edit it until you have a certain number of posts up.
I agree that having more specific locations makes the forum feel more friendly and people interact better with someone they can relate to due to location or something in the past as Uncle Al alluded to.

Please don't make things 'mandatory'. This is one of the friendliest forums i've ever been a part of. If people would prefer their location to remain private then lets not remove that option. Mandatory fields may deter potential new members.
If someone asks for help they will need to provide a location but it is then their choice to reveal information about their private life.

Surely it should just be up to the poster when selling something to state their location in the ad?

In these days of data mining I really don't see the relevance of the location being important for anything the poster doesn't feel the need to share publicly.
