hello from Sydney
Hi guys
First timer here.
I'm from Sydney and just discovered this forum.
I'm interested in making my own furnitures mainly because I love having better quality timber furnitures at home with my own specifications.
Obviously if I asked a shop to custom made all my furniture that'd cost a fortune, hence the decision to make my own.
Absolute newbie, so obviously I will only attempt basic furnitures like simple table or shelves and leave the complicated ones to the pro.
What I plan to build:
- desk with pinhead legs and granite top
- hallway table
- Some shelves/book case
- Floating shelves
- Planters
I also haven't got any of the tools except a drill. So I might need your help in deciding what tools to get to make those above.
Cheers guys

What part of Sydney are you from? as you could join up with a men's shed and have access to good quality woodworking machinery. The older men are often quite helpful in suggesting what joints or tools to use for the project.

I'm from Western Sydney. will look into that Men's shed suggestion as well. The thing is I'm not very social person in real life lol.
By the way for woods I've decided to work on Huon pine, Blackwood, and some sassafras.
I'll probably practice with some bunnings pine as those above aren't cheap to make mistakes with, haha

Welcome to the forum.
I agree good quality custom made furniture can be expensive and for those that have no interest in woodworking the choice would be limited. Making something yourself can give you a very good feeling. One of the things to remember is not to be discourage if something does not work out exactly as you wanted. We all have to start somewhere and you will find after more projects are completed you will find it easier.
Pick a project that you would like to make and ask questions if you get stuck. I believe the best thing about this site is that members will offer their opinion. And there might be different opinions, after all there are more than one solution to a problem.
I might suggest making planter boxes as your first project from scrap wood(garbage collection day) or even from pallet wood.
