Cabinet maker, furniture restorer looking for job in Victoria

G` day everyone
Not sure if I can post my thread here but I tought it might be good idea to ask all forum users for help in finding employment in Victoria. I am cabinet maker , furniture restorer with many years of experience in my trade. Working as a furniture restorer in Ireland at the moment. Have applied for 489 visa ,sponsored to Victoria and wonder if any one have heard of any job opportunity in my trade. You are more then welcome to see some pictures of my work in my album. Many thanks for your help and any kind of advise.

Hi There,

Last month my family and I were granted a Sponsored provisional visa 489 to Australia (we are entitled to live and work in Victoria only). Its a great news ,now I trie to find work. Attached please my last project, I have restored it for the Michael Collins Museum in Clonakilty, Co. Cork . Ireland.

Thank you for your kind words, of course it would be great to catch up with you on some stage. We have family in Melbourne so I hope that they will help me to start new life Down Under. We are family of four and I would like to come first to Australia to organize everything. It would be great if I could find work while I am still here in Ireland but will see how goes. I would appreciate any advise and help from all members of this great forum.

Its a long way to Victoria... Year I moved to UK, to beautiful Cotswold. · Set up my on business and provide a range of cabinet making and restoration services for a prominent Antiques dealer in Cirencester.
· I work on high quality antiques, from the 17 century on, made by craftsmen such as Gillows of Lancaster, Hawords & Sons etc.
Restored pieces are sold worldwide, and can be as valuable as £300,000 per piece. This is what we do here with superb knowledge , expertise , love and craftsmanship we are able bring old antiques to the previous glory. A business around the corner from me carries out this kind of work, seemingly to a very high standard. I don't know if they're looking to hire anyone, but it might be worth introducing yourself and seeing what comes of it. At the least they might be able to put you on to others in the trade. G`day everyone

Hand veneering it is quiet difficult job, especially veneering using animal glue. I have attached photo of table top I was working on. All work is done manually without any veneer press. All what you need to do n old traditional way is animal glue, veneer hammer and experience.
Will try to up load more photos of my work shortly.

Glad to hear you like my work. I am quite busy over here in the UK but my gol is to find work in Australia. We have been granted visa to life and work in Victoria state so I do not need any sponsor and I am able to take employment very soon.
I am still looking for job in OZ where I could use my skill and experience.I have been to Australia a few months ago for holiday with my family and we love OZ a lot. We had a great time in Morningron Peninsula and now I miss it all.

The bookcase is ready for seal. I spend a lot of time on restoration but it was well worth it. Now you can enjoy it , have look and tell me what you think about my project. Is my skill good enough for Australian furniture market?
Of course you can buy it as well for £ 28000 but you dont have to, I am here to show you my skill.

thanks for your opinion but I think that Australia needs skilled people like me...I love to work with wood not only on restoration . Below please find picture of corner cabinet I made for one of my customers. I have veneered it by hand using cherry veneer .

Hi Chris,
This forum is not necessarily the best one for seeking work in high quality antique restoration. It is dominated by the hobbyist woodworker (who, I must add unless the last comment is seen as derogatory, mostly far exceed my skill level).

Premier antiques shops/dealers (I am not a dealer) like Andrew Simpson Antiques and John Hawkins Antiques are always on the lookout for really good restorers. They are also very wary of false claimants so you may get a "prove it or B**ger-off response" You could also talk to Campbell Conservation, who do a lot of work for museums etc, and are run by a Pom.

The fine antiques trade is under considerable pressure in Australia as the market has shrunk with the changing economy. I am sure that is the same in the UK.

SUMMARY: There is work in Aus, but it is far from guaranteed, so often only hand-to-mouth for the very qualified, unfortunately.
