Repairing ends of Oragon Beams
Hi all,
I've got a pergola made of Oragon Beams.
Sealed and painted.
And the joints (about 5 out of 20) where they meet have rotted. I'm sure its just where the water hasn't been able to dry properly.
I'm told the beams have been there for 21 years.
I'm also told the Oragon is light and very sound as a structural beam.
Is there an easy way to repair these as I'd like to renovate by removing them completely (for immediate safety sake) if the expence is too high.
My thought is to simply repair the beams with another short piece of Oragon and use an overlaping joint. The beams will not be supporting any weight and will be sealed and painted.

G,day Barry
Have built many pergola,s over the years and its always the same story, oregon is a great timber when protected from the elements, has been outlawed in NSW in external use.
Has a stress grade of F7 in general and obtainable in long lengths,Canada and west america are main supplers,NZ does export but a useless timber, would suggest cut back rotted section all rafters, support exsistings with a beam at 90 degrees and infill with jack rafters, and COVER.
