What is it?
Over Easter I was out bush camping. Just where I camped was this magnifcent Salmon Gum with this un-usual (dead) growth out of its trunk. I haven't seen anything like this before.

Looks like a branch that has died after a bit of mistletoe has grown on it. Usually the tree will try to grow around the mistletoe and smother it which explains the unusual growth at the end of the dead stick (the mistletoe itself is much softer and would have rotted away very quickly). If that doesn't work then the whole branch will die which kills the mistletoe and then usually that branch will weaken and break off. In this case the branch didn't break off and now the tree is continuing to grow and slowly engulf the dead branch. Unusual yes. If you see live ones you can do the tree a favour and cut them off and the wood inside is usually pretty good with a mix of eucalypt and mistletoe locked together.
