Another MARS lathe owner in Brisbane.
Hi All,
I've been lurking around these forums for a bit, picking up all sorts of useful info.
When not suffering through the desk job, I like to get my hands dirty.
I've worked my way through car restoration, hot rods, motorcycle building, bicycle building, basic guitar making, some general fabrication etc.
I'm better with metal than timber, and I'm currently dabbling in aluminium casting and trying to get my boys interested in the fine art of "pottering about in the shed".
For the last few months I've been researching metal lathes with not much budget, only to find a MARS lathe in my neighbour's shed.
That will find it's way to my shed tomorrow I hope, and I will join the small band of MARS lathe owners here.
Photos will be forthcoming.
I've only been able to have a quick look at it so far, so I don't have much to report yet.
It will need new belts, motor, and TLC.
The back gears are not there, there is a fair amount of backlash in the carriage, and I believe the power feed is not operational (though I suspect a missing gear for the power feed shaft is the culprit). It does have a gearbox.
I'm fairly mechanically minded and looking for a project, so I'm not daunted. However, I am a lathe newbie and I hope to share progress with you all, and hopefully get some assistance from the MARS owners in showing me some of the bits that may not be there anymore.
Cheers,
Scott.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Scott".
There are a stack of members in Brisbane and across S.E. Queensland plus the rest of the country.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork...
Cheers crowie
PS - may I suggest a new thread in the metalwork section to ask about the lathe as you'll gain a wider audience and thus more likely for an appropriate answer.
