Many Thin coats of canned clear reduces Gloss w/ Cut & Polish?
I know thinning canned PolyU makes it noticeable less gloss off the brush, but is this true for a Cut & Polish? I would think so, as the thinners or what ever used affects the gloss in it & is separate from the cut & polished process.
I will try in a few weeks, would like to know from anyone who tried it.
When experimenting with gloss canned shellac I think this was the case, the stuff seemed too thin & when cut n polished, it's gloss looked lacking. Please correct me if wrong.
thanks

Polly eurathane and many other reactive finishes suffer when thinned because the resins get divided too much and fail to bond properly.....pollyU in particular will go milky, lack clarity (such that it is), and lack hardness if thinned too far.......this eems to be less of a problem when thinning with cleaner thinners..ie white spirit in stead of mineral turps.
On he other hand many drying finishes & simple resins like shelac and laquer type finishes tolerate being thinnned dramaiticly...that is their big advantege.....BUT....purity of the thinner is more of a problem the more thinner is used.......in particular metho with shelac.....water content in metho used with shelac is a big issue and the thinner the cut the more of an issue it is.
Contaminated solvent in shelac and laquer can result in lack of clarity, milkyness and lack of or failure to harden.
For something to be cut or pollished effectivly it needs to be hard....and clear

Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
