    Does any one know what the typical finish is on a carved champhor wood chest?

    I don't know if they have changed the finish in the last few years but it used to be shellac. If you are repairing damage try a little metho an a rag (on the back)if the polish softens or comes off onto the rag you know you're on a winner. vinnie

    Thanks Vinnie makes sense that shelac would have been used I will test the box and give it a go.
