HELP With Table! Please!
Hi all,
Mom bought our custom dining room table years ago on Craigslist and has been in love with it ever since. Recently its been starting to crack and wear, so I would like to refinish it for her. The problem is, I'm not quite sure what finish is on it (Resin?) and how the artist got the effect he did... I've attached the best pictures I could take of it in hopes of getting some advice as to what it is, and how I can redo this effect. The pictures are from the side view, its a large square table with a 'lazy Susan' in the middle. Thank you for the help in advance!
Mike

It appears to be marbled with a possible epoxy resin finish. There are a number of ways to achieve this effect but to restore it........ That's a whole other thing.
LEAVE IT ALONE or take it to someone who specialises in this type of finish. Probably few and far between.
If mum/mom loves it and you ruin it with a botched restoration she won't be in love with you even though as a mum/mom she has to love you.

If it is just ply then I would suggest make a new top from whatever you like and play around with the finish you want. If your mum does not like the new top at least the old has not been wrecked beyond the damage already sustained.

you could look at using lino floor sheets to make a new top from as you can get it in a range of styles.

Buy a new sheet of plywood in the correct thickness, cut to size, cover with a sheet of laminate.
From the pics and your description that looks like some kind of hand painted faux travertine finish, so if that's the look you like, buy a sheet of travertine laminex and bob's yer uncle!
