Today I moved the lathe into its new home.

I now have a nice machining area with everything close at hand.

And I still have access to the shaper.

Plenty room.
I could move it back a bit.
Fact is the shaper is sitting over a gap in the concrete. The old concrete was broken at an angle. I poured the new stuff straight. This left a gap about 12 inches at the widest. The bricks at left of the shaper are sitting in the gap.

Nice one. I can't tell from the pic, but is the 3 ball handle installed yet?

No, it has not been installed yet, but I have been giving it some thought. I have to work out how to go about it. The cross slide screw was butchered somewhat in the process of installing(?) the other handwheel.
I will need to remove the cross slide screw and machine this end true and then drill the 3 ball handle to suit this size. A keyway will then need to be cut in the handle, and a means to secure the handle on to the shaft will be needed. The end of the shaft measures 12.20mm - 12.05mm.
When I previously discussed this I was not sure of what exactly had been done to the shaft. Further investigation has revealed the facts.
The current (Nuttall) wheel is held on with the screw from the Nuttall, which is of course imperial. I guess that the end of the screw was drilled and tapped for this.
Scratch that. I just measured the screw. It is M5. The reason I thought Nuttall was it is a slotted screw. Although M5 thread, the head is about 15mm diam, 4mm thick and flat. If it is original then the threaded hole will be centered on the shaft. It should do the job. I still need to make the handle for the handle.
Seems pretty simple. Then I need to work out how to hold the 3 ball handle to drill it and cut the keyway. Cutting the keyway might be interesting. How to do that? Machine a block to support it level for drilling/tapping etc. Mount this block to the faceplate in the lathe to cut keyway?

Posts 1 and 7 may give some clues...

I do have a set of imperial and metric broaches if that helps as well - what size key? I doubt that I have them but I'll have a look for the blocks I made up shown in post 1. Easy enough to make anyway. Small length of stock, bore with a taper, slit in half.
