Cutting top plate or notch beam?
Was planning on installing the two purlins / intermediate beams tomorrow. The gable end that I'm extending from has got the top plate cut above every beam and they are sitting level with the top plate. Rafters go over.
I'm wondering if it's better ( stronger ) to cut the top plate above the purlins or notch out the beam from a 290 to 250. If I do cut the top plate and bugle through each stud from both sides will this affect the integrity of the bracing?
