Timber type
Can anyone identify this timber, please. It is a heavy timber, probably some type of hardwood. It has been oiled which makes it a bit harder to identify. The item is a nutcracker that a friend bought and wants a new mallet made in the same timber.

Greg ! with the light flecks through it ,I would hazard a guess at "Merbeu" not the right spelling but I think its used a lot in decking , I think I made a pepper grinder from some laminated pieces at some stage cheers ~ John

looks to me like an old redgum fence post, the grain doesnt seem open enough for Merbau

Not Merbau (Kwilla) IMO, and if it is a local timber, my guess would be Ironbark

I agree with Shedbound, it doesn't look at all like any Merbau I've handled. My bet would be on some species of Eucalypt, too. If it came from around Brisbane, it's probably unlikely to be Redgum, more likely Ironbark, or possibly Forest redgum, perhaps, but I wouldn't bet money on any particular one, given it has aged & stained with use or oiling, etc. I reckon you could use any of quite a few different Eucalypts, and as long as the colour is close enough to start with, a bit of age & oiling will give you a pretty good match...
Cheers,IW

Thanks for the replies. Oiled timber is hard to identify

My guess would be Bluegum also, bit hard to tell for sure with your photos though.
Any chance you could take a thin shaving off one side ( a side with the red heartwood ) with a sharp chisel to expose some fresh timber, then post a photo.
Or even if you used a scraper to scrape the exposed surface off.
I have got some Bluegum offcuts here, I can send you a piece if you like.Brad.

Thanks for the offer Brad. I haven't been asked to do it but just to identify the timber. If they want me to make the hammer, I'll get back to you. Thanks again
