Default building a desk out of a slab of timber

    Hi all

I'm thinking about building myself a new desk, I'm toying with the idea of using a single slab of wood to make the top.

I'm wondering if this is a good idea, instead of laminating one from boards.

Can slabs warp, twist bend more? Is there special techniques i'd have to keep in mind when working with the top.

any help would be most appreciated

    Matt

    Have a read here.

I love my big desk. I don't think the top is ever going to move. And it can double as an air raid shelter.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

As seen it can be done and done well but it will take a dry stable slab in the first place. If your DRY slab has sat around the shed properly stickered for about a year and not moved then it should work. The grain of the slab is also important as the closer to quarter sawn the more stable it will be. The choice slab is a couple out from the log center with grain like this //////////\\\\\\\\\\. When you come to apply finish to the final job apply to both sides so moisture change is the same both sides.
    Regards
    John
