Default Wax for adding patina look?

    Hi,

Getting back into woodworking after an enforced break (home reno's, lost the garage and still building a workshop). I have a few projects in mind and want to add an aged/patina look to a few things.

    So, to my newbie question...

I happened to see an episode of "How It's Made" yesterday and they were making decoy ducks, and showed adding a patina finish to the wood with wood wax. I couldn't see what it was, but they got a yellow paste wax from a tin and wrapped it in a closth, then olished the decoy with the wax-loaded cloth. Didn't seem to be a shellac/tung item, more a thick paste or chunks of soft wax.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a local product like this?

    Thanks,
    Darren

You could try some UBeaut Traditional wax (Neutral I would use) and see how that goes. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Liberon sell Patinating Wax which is a jet balck paste wax....essentially it fills any surface irregularities and difficult to access areas with the dark wax, immitating the buildup of grime over time.. You can achieve similar results with other coloured paste waxes as well.

You might also want to check Chris Schwarz blog at Popular Woodworking under 'creepy janitor' which is what he calls the wax he uses.
