I'd be thinking along the lines of having everything even the bolts painted as well.
Trains were generally fully assembled before being painted and detailed.
So the bolts were painted over.
But regardless of wether you have them painted or not it's going to look
fantastic Keith.
I'm really enjoying this build great stuff mate!
Trevor.

My wife has come up with a typical expected response. "Paint every second bolt". I think I will tell her to stick with her quilting.

I am in a bit of a quandary now. Don't know which way to go. Giving a second coat today so I will paint a few extra bolts and see what they come out like.

Hi,
I do not know, would they have even painted it in those days, they would have been more worried about even geting it to work, after all you have painted it to look like raw cast iron.
Beautiful job so far and it's your train so don't let the rest of us confuse the issue.
Do Thomas the tank engine next for the paint enthusiasts.

If you do paint the bolts, paint them red

Hi,
Thanks to everyone who made input on the question whether to paint the bolts or not. Well, as I said this morning, I was going to do a trial to see how a couple of bolts looked. They looked fantastic. Really made it look prototypical as I was trying to get everything looking like it was made out of cast iron. I painted all the bolts. Another 2 coats on each of the boiler end plates and 2 coats on the boiler itself. I also gave on of the gears a coat and looks pretty good. It's going to be a monocolour build, but I don't think Trevithick would have worried much about colour. I am sick of dabbing paint on - 6.5 hours today. Look forward to getting on my lathe an turning up some aluminium spindles for the idler gear and the main wheel shafts.
Thanks again to everyone who has had input.

Looks like I was wrong about lack of definition if painted all the same colour, it looks fantastic and I do agree that when the real one was first built, it would have all been one colour more than likely.

I am just about to finish a carpark that I've been working on for longer than intended.
It is a gift for two of my grandchildren.
I bought some filler to patch up here and there. It is only a cheaper brand brew but boy
is it a great product to finish!! I can now see how Trev and Kieth get such great finishes in difficult areas.

Spanner in the works....
Here's a spanner in the works, Keith.... While your paint job looks great, had you considered "hammertone paint" as a finish??

Thanks Crowie,
I assume it would be easier to apply than dabbing with a brush for 6 plus hours. I will look at this when I get onto Stephenson's Rocket after I finish the Peny-Darren. I am going to make the Rocket by "hook or by Crook".
Thanks
