A birch? gift

A friend dropped this off last night and I reckon its birck. The only thing is it doesn't look quite right. It's definitely not silver birch. I've cut one of those before and it was quite orange in colour. this is brown; so i was expecting all birches to be orangey, hence the doubt. The leaves are slightly sandpapery on the top surface. A couple are slightly visible at the top of the first Pic. I might take another with a better leaf pic.
The narly/burl stuff is of course the interesting bit. Good for pens and little stuff I'd reacon. I'l cut some when I get a new bandsaw blade broke the last one and just sharpened it.

Wow, have no idea what it is, but certainly an interesting nodules on the roots. Definitely looks like a casting job to me, dam forgot to give you that demo, you might have to send them to me once they are dry and I'm back in the GC.

Those root nodules are typical of the Alders (Alnus species), which are closely related to the Birches. The nodules are nitrogen-fixing devices as are found in legumes.
Don't know enough about the genus to help with actual species.
