Jigsaw attachment vs Small Bandsaw

Hello All,

I'm looking to make some small toys and other pieces, small but not small enough to be comfortable using a scroll saw.

I'm really tight for space, so I'd need a compelling reason to get a bandsaw. I do have a triton 2000 workcentre with the router table, is the jigsaw attachment usable for 50-90mm straight and curved cuts?

I don't know about the machine you speak of, but I will say a, at least, 14" band saw is well worth investment. I don't think I would ever be without one and find I use it more and more, and the table saw less and less. With a well set up band saw I can make very good straight cuts as well as the curved. And, I can cut at least 6" thick stock, straight or curves.

The Triton jig-saw kit was the first thing I put up against the wall and shot when I got my first bandsaw.

If you mean 50-90mm tall, then no it isn't suitable.

If you are really tight for space then a 10" bandsaw will cut curves in 90 mm thick wood, .
I found a 9¹/₄ " Ryobi bandsaw by the side of the road with a broken switch which I fixed and it was surprising what that thing could cut.
I think that is limited to an 80 mm cut
When I picked up a 10" Woodfast BS I gave the Ryobi to my son who has done a lot of work with it.

OTOH, I reckon the Triton pendulum action jigsaw is a good power tool and I have used it to cut a lot of tight curves in wood and even curves in 6mm thick steel.
But it's limited to about 30 mm wood.

A friend who already has a 17" bandsaw which he mostly uses for resawing recently bought a 10" carbatec bandsaw for curved work. It is surprising How good it is for all sorts of jobs and can be stored under a bench and bought out when needed. Worth a look I reckon.

Firstly welcome to the forum Pete.

I have not used the Triton jigsaw attachment but do have a 14" bandsaw. Even if you are tight for space I would still look at a bandsaw I use mine for quick cuts.

Hello All

Thanks to all of you for replying, it looks like all of you recommend a bandsaw. I've now seen the small Carbatec one, I never realised it was small enough to mount it on a movable stand and have room underneath for something else.

Now I get an excuse to build something else now - the bandsaw cabinet
