    Thank you all for the comments. This was one of those projects that evolved over a period of time.
    I wanted to incorporate home made wooden hinges but was worried about their durability in such a large and heavy box. Inlaying the hinges is the perfect way to get exact alignment between lid and base on assembly.
    The Brusso lid stays are a beautifully made quality brass item and take all the stress when the lid is opened so I believe in normal use the hinges will last a lifetime.
    The lid stays are not too difficult to fit and along with all the other brass accents look good when the box is opened.

    Ruddy I know what you mean about the brusso lid stays played with some yesterday. Well worth it. I don't understand when someone goes to the trouble of making a nice box only to put crap hinges in them.
