Your Wisdom sought.........yeah right
Welcome back viewers.
I have just received a memo from the builder I am working for, and it tells me how to lay bricks. ( Im a brickie for those who dont know )
I guess 30 odd years is not enough time to gain an insight into how to lay them, thats why they sent the memo.
Any how, here is what was writ.
I cant make head nor tail of it.
Ive asked 4 different ppl and got 4 different answers.
"Note
Tolerance on bed joint width +- 3mm ( normally 10mm)
Tolerances on thickness of perpend 8mm max/min difference overall brickwork overall (5mm min)"
That is how it is writ word for word.
Ohh learned ones please enlighten me.....

Everyone is an expert Al - perhaps you should have asked him/her/it to demonstrate.

tolerance on bed Maybe he thinks your intolerant in bed always want to go first or sumthuing.
Joint width+-3mm( Normally 10mm ) your rolling them to fat man
or he could mean the thickness of the mud under each brick has to be between 7mm and 13mm thick ( if he does lay the first 7mm the next 13mm and when he complains show him the memo)
The trouble with life is there's no background music.

I've never, that's NEVER seen in 35 years, a bricklayer that's read a specification before. That's clearly where you are going wrong!
On two occasions I've had to lay a sample panel to prove the tolerances were possible, which proved mighty embarrassing to the bricky concerned I might add!
Now for the bed tolerance. I don't believe you!!! We're talking tolerance here, so +- 3mm means the bed can range from 7-13mm
  OK if you are laying bananas, but if they are clean extruded things, I'd be a bit tougher!
The perp tolerance is simply not able to be understood, so I can't answer.
I think they mean an 8mm perp with a -3mm tolerance.
ie brick dimension 230 + 1 perp 8 = 238 or brick dimension 227 + 1 perp = 235 (-3mm) or brick dimension 232 + 1 perp (6mm) = 238 ???
Go back and ask them to draw a diagram and put in writing what they mean!! Don't take the job unless they confirm in writing!!
Cheers??
P (and you do this in the COLD???)

Ok, so I lied.
I knew what the bed thing ment.
But for the perps??
Tolerances on thickness of perpend 8mm max/min difference overall brickwork overall (5mm min)
I am at a total lose, perps are normally 10mm.
10mm, plus 8mm= 18mm
10mm minus 8mm=2mm
10mm plus 8mm minus 5mm..........................my brain hurts.
Ive done heaps of work for this builder over the last 3 years, now this......huh!!

Ask him what tolerances his bricks are as they may affect everything else

Thinking about - hes a funny bugger.
Funny buggers are usually a lot more trouble than they're worth.
Ditch the job and get another one.

Al
This is what you've got to tell the builder. These contributions are from, respectively Darren (SilentC) and your humble servant
Contribution 1 (Darren)
I don't know, I see a bit of synergy here that we could leverage. Let's take that offline and we'll get our people to workshop it for a few weeks.
Contribution 2 (Me)
Then we can caucus their output with the other stakeholders and get consensus to implement a timeframe. At the end of the day, we should be able to deliver on a triple (thanks, Alex!) bottom-line outcome, going forward.
Hope this helps!

Maybe it means that there can't be more than 8mm difference between adjacent perps?
It's not english. Refer to Col's post."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

What it all means is that now, he (the boss) has handed out the instructions, he (the boss) will always be right, and you (the brickie) will be wrong.
Funny about that

You all might be wide of the mark..
Perhaps he's thinking of joining the Silly Buggers Society and was casting about for somehing to do to make himself look like a complete goose..
