G'day from Terrigal
G'day All,
I am recently retired and looking to broaden my woodworking skills. I have a reasonably equipped workshop and have far more enthusiasm than talent!
I attempted to build my daughter a sun lounge using steam bent 20mm staves of Tassie Oak from plans in a US Magazine.
They suggested using Red or White Oak. While I am aware Tassie Oak isn't Oak, it was the best straight grain timber I could find.
After steaming the first 6, I split 5 and the other is about to split.
The sun lounge turned into a quite respectable coffee table.
I would appreciate any guidance in choosing a timber that I can steam and bend or any other suggestions.
Cheers
Martin

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Martin".
There are quite a few members on the Central Coast with heaps in the Greater Sydney & Newcastle areas......
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork..
Cheers crowie
PS - Best ask the specialist questions in the relevant forum sub-sections so you get a broader audience for answers....

G'day Martin.
Welcome to the forum from just up the road in Springfield.
I can't help with the steaming, I have never tried it. Photos always go down well in this place -especially photos of work in process and setups to do thigs, like steam bending.____________________________________________________________

Welcome to the forum.
I would suggest posting your questions in the General subsection of the forum the link I have pasted below.
WOODWORK - GENERAL
Not everyone looks into this section of the forum and you should get a few more replies. I might also suggest doing a search of the forum, try searching steam bending or another option would be to laminate thins strips of wood for the curved parts.
