    Default Shopping spree at MIK

Have told SWMBO that I'll drop her off at the gym tomorrow and then come back an hour later and pick her up. One hour should be long enough to get through my shopping list at MIK.

    Done!

Talk about military precision...in with a huge shopping list and out with a melted credit card in 20 minutes. Had to kill 30 minutes while waiting for SWMBO to finish up at the gym so sat in the gym waiting area caressing my new Veritas low angle smoothing plane.....got some very strange looks from the other people there.

    Very good work Kiwi

Fumbling around with a plane in Kerry OBriens will get you looks like that.

Mind you it is no way at all to hide what you are doing from SWMBO

A bit hard trying to hide three huge blue shopping bags bulging with woodie ....thought I might as well try the shock approach and confront her straight away with the most expensive item.

SWMBO actually liked quite a few of the tools.....dont know if I should be worried about that. She loved the cute little violin makers planes and she reckoned the Veritas block plane was ok as well.

Good work on deducing which fitness centre I was sitting in....not many others just around the corner from MIK I guess

You were caressing what while waiting at the gym...?

Well done on the shock and awe tool acquisition tactics. Interesting approach. I generally go for the sof'ly sof'ly line over a long period with lots of build-up and lots of justification. I took my swmbo on a tour of MIKs recently. She seemed to be impressed with the product line: only managed to buy some sheets of sandpaper, though.

Anyone else got any other tool acquisition tactics?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Oh that's easy. I'm a bachelor so I just ask myself, I agree, and I take myself out to buy it. Simple. Unless we both get to arguing, in which case I'm never sure who to agree with, myself or myself, and believe me, those three way arguments can be really nasty so that's when I step in to moderater - it's hard to have a good four way argument, especially when one of me is hiding from the decision, one is trying to soothe the way and the other two me's are being pig headed.

The actual operation was executed with lightening speed but the planning took months.....hours spent going through catalogues, researching what sort of tools well known luthiers use, reviews in AWR and FW mags. Also took note of comments in the ubeaut forums.

Dont tell me...you told her the sandpaper would do a better job than the exfoliation cream shes currently using?

Am still worried about the way SWMBO was eyeing up my new planes. I reckon she wants to stick them in the display cabinet in the lounge.....its were my Brunton Geologist's compass ended up

I work near Carbatec, McJing's, H&F so i get them while at work, but i found the easiest way is to simply open my catalogue's and explain what i need, how much it is going to cost and where i can get it.......over and over and over again. After 2 months she will do anything to shut me up and send me to go buy it.

    Works every time

Hmmm thats a bit like a problem I got... when I go to the gym for a workout SWMBO the chef goes shopping for her tools and stock!(she gives me funny looks when I use woodie terms, I call her rollin pin "the thicknessor"... thats until she starts waving it at me!)

Oh dear, the MBGW has to go to Rozelle tomorrow and I am accompaning her. She has suggested that I go to and look around. So I will do the Sydney trifecta - Woodworks at Ryde, Carba -tec at Auburn and McJings at Yagoona. Even better news, she has released the CC to me . . . what to buy?

Yeah, but what's she done to the available credit? Better check what sandpaper you need

I'm still chuffed about my big win last weekend - an oilstone, wide enough to do my plane blades, two grades of grit, for UNDER $20.

And what's even better, is I have to make a pair of oars this weekend, so I'll get to use it ... on that no-name plane I found in a flea market a couple of years ago.
