katalox, wenge or blackwoods?
Hi everyone, having been doing some work recently on some siam rosewood furniture at work i've been doing a bit of research into dark hardwoods, i'm just wondering if anyone knows where to get any decent sized katalox, wenge, queen ebony or malaysian blackwood boards or slabs from for a reasonable price or if anyone knows of any more easily available woods similar to katalox?

I don't have any detailed information, I'm sorry. However, there has been someone selling Queen Ebony at the Brisbane Wood and working with timber shows for the last couple of shows so there is a local supplier here if you can find them. Try contacting the show organisers for their contact details.

Mathews timber in Rooks Road Vermont have Wenge in 300 mm x 25 mm x approx 3 metre lengths. $97.00/lm. They also have Macassar Ebony, but most of the really black stuff has gone.
Talk to Anthony at AFT about Queen Ebony, I think he has some. I think AFT also have some Wenge in 200 mm x 50 mm x 3 metre lengths. Similar price to Mathews.
You could try Bowerbird Salvaged Timbers for very dark woods as well.
Also try Delta Recovery in Plummer St. Port Melbourne. They have a lot of demolition stuff that has been cleaned and dressed.
As for slabs.....
Hope that helps.
Remember, "reasonable price" is directly proportional to the need for the item under consideration. The more you want it..the more "reasonable" prices become.
Regards,
Rob

We get the occasional red mahogany thats a "dark cutter"and comes out with a colour similar to katalox. They still make good 6 x 2's
, and theres a few lying in the shed ATM (Wouldn't be properly seasoned though). Black Bean is available readily enough for a blacker rather then redder colour.
